What is Positive Psychology?

Positive psychology, pioneered by Dr. Martin Seligman, is a scientific approach to explore human potential. It studies human thoughts, feelings, and behavior from a positive perspective. It aims to understand what makes life most worth living and seeks to help individuals flourish and live their best lives. Instead of solely focusing on weaknesses and problems, positive psychology emphasizes strengths and positive experiences. 

 

Positive psychology seeks to promote overall well-being by helping individuals navigate and cope with adversity, build resilience, and find meaning and purpose in their lives. It recognizes that suffering is a part of the human experience and aims to provide tools and strategies to help individuals flourish even in the face of adversity.

At Person Centre, we offer private therapy and coaching services that are based on the principles of Positive Psychology and Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LICBT).

We recognize that addressing mental health issues isn't just about alleviating symptoms, it's about fostering overall health and happiness. Our aim is to help you improve your mental wellbeing by not only reducing negative symptoms but also promoting positivity and happiness. To achieve this, we combine the benefits of Positive Psychology and CBT. Our team facilitated the Science of Happiness program at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. We helped students build evidence-based wellbeing habits in their daily lives, drawing heavily on the research findings from Positive Psychology. Today, we offer even more refined and redesigned resources to assist you in achieving your most ambitious goals and aspirations.

Who can benefit from Positive Psychology?

Our resources cater to individuals who are 16 years or older and have at least one of the following goals (but not limited to):

  • simply interested in how Positive Psychology can help them maximize their potential and flourish in various aspects of their lives, such as work, study, relationships, and beyond.

  • find themselves in "mental subhealth" - a state between mental health and mental illness, where a person may not have a diagnosed mental illness but experiences symptoms or struggles with their mental well-being. It can include symptoms such as stress, anxiety, mild depression, and difficulty coping with daily life. Mental subhealth is not a clinical diagnosis, but rather a concept used to acknowledge and address mental health concerns before they develop into more critical conditions.

  • look for evidence-based tools to manage mild to moderate mental health problems, such as depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic, Phobia, and Insomnia.

Free Online Introductory Course:

  • This course introduces our evidence-based approach combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Positive Psychology.

  • Participants can download practical tools, including:

  • A CBT tool to help you understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours during stressful situations

  • A goal-setting tool to support personal growth and development

​​​​Affordable Initial Consultation: HKD 50 / 30 minutes

  • After exploring the free resources, you may choose to book an initial consultation at an affordable price.

  • You’re welcome to send your needs and goals before the session, so the therapist can tailor the meeting to you.

  • Even in just 30 minutes, people often walk away with something meaningful. 

  • People use the initial consultation for different purposes, such as:

- Getting an overview of their study or career direction

- Clarifying a major life challenge that has been affecting them

- Exploring available community resources

- Taking a moment to pause, breathe, and consider their next steps in life

  • We might also make recommendations and send you a tailored lesson plan after the consultation based on what you have told us.

After the initial consultation, you can choose the type of support that suits you best.

  • Some people prefer 1-to-1 sessions (we offer flexible options: single sessions, or discounted bundles of 3 or 6 sessions).

  • Others may be more interested in our online courses, and some choose a mix-and-match of both.

  • All our services are guided by practical tools and professional knowledge from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Positive Psychology, helping you stay on track and monitor your progress.

Renee is a mother, a Registered Nurse in Hong Kong, and a Qualified Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner trained in the United Kingdom. She delivers Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LICBT)- based intervention to clients with mild to moderate anxiety and depression in public and private sectors. She has undergone additional training to effectively support clients with insomnia, obsessive compulsive disorder, health anxiety, and long-term conditions, and working with interpreters. She is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.

She worked as an Assistant Teacher for the Science of Happiness credit-bearing module at the University of Bristol. She facilitated the learning and development of first-year undergraduate students in weekly happiness hubs, supporting them to build evidence-based wellbeing habits into their lives with findings from Positive and Cognitive Psychology. 

Renee is completing Stage 1 Health Psychologist training in the United Kingdom, which helps her shape the resources and services at Person Centre with an additional emphasis on the relationship between mental and physical health, as well as general wellness.
